Finally we had snow in Luxembourg. Last winter, we didn’t have the chance to have everything covered in white outside. But this year, we are really spoiled with snow. So I had to take the opportunity to make pictures of our capital city in the snow. Besides the snow, I want to show you the 10 things to see in Luxembourg City.
Luxembourg City is the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It has a population of 107.247. When someone tells you that he/she will go in the city, we know immediately where he is going, because we only have one big city. I really love Luxembourg City, because it reflects a modern part, but also a more historic part, which makes it really attractive for tourists.
This is one of my favorite views of Luxembourg City. The two pictures were taken on the same day, but looks completely different. You can see the Grund in front with the fortifications and in the background the modern Kirchberg.
Since December 1994, the City of Luxembourg and its Old Quarters and Fortifications are part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. This is mainly because of its strategic position. From the 16th century until 1867, it was one of the greatest fortified sites in Europe. Even though it is dismantled today, it still reflects a lot of the old Fortifications and turns the Old City into a charming capital city.
The Gëlle Fra, or Golden Lady in English, is a luxembourgish war memorial dedicated to the thousands of luxembourgish people who died in WWI. It is located on the Place de la Constitution (Constitution Square) and its official name is Monument of Remembrance.
In 2010, the Golden Lady was removed from their obelisk and travelled to Shanghai. There she was standing in the entrance of the Luxembourg pavilion of the Expo 2010 world exhibition.
The Kirchberg is a quarter in Luxembourg City. It is the more „modern“ part of Luxembourg City. With the European Court of Justice, parts of the European Commission and the secretariat of the European Parliament, it forms also a European quarter.
Besides this, a part of the University of Luxembourg, the Utopolis (cinema), the Philharmonie Luxembourg (the national concert hall) and the D’Coque arena (largest sports venue) are also located on the Kirchberg.
From 1572 to 1795, this building was the city hall and only in 1890, with the accession of the House of Nassau-Weilburg, it became the palace for the Grand Duke and its family.
Today, it is the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg and the place, where he exercise his official functions.
Whenever you want to visit the Palace, you’ll find guards in front of it. They have to watch over the Palace. They either are standing there without moving, and from time to time, they are marching in front of the Palace. This is basically a touristic attraction, because tourists make pictures of them, but they are not allowed to talk to anybody or even to laugh or smile at you.
The Cathedral, in English the Cathedral of Our Lady, is located in Luxembourg City in the Ville Haute. It is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Luxembourg.
The Cercle is located at the Place d’armes. It has been renovated in 2011. It is nowadays possible to lend different rooms of the Cercle. If you want more informations about this beautiful building – here is the link „http://cerclecite.lu„.
Currently, the Pont Adolphe or Adolphe Bridge in English, is under construction. It is an arch bridge in Luxembourg City and connects basically the Ville Haute to the Gare. The Ville Haute is the main Luxembourg City quartier and the Gare is the quartier where the central station is located. It is one of the main sights in Luxembourg and also chosen as the representative in Mini Europe in Brussels.
The Place Guillaume II is a town square in Luxembourg City. In Luxembourg, it is known as the „Knuedler“. On the place itself, you’ll find the City Hall of Luxembourg City, as well as a statue of Grand Duke William II. Today, it is used basically for open air music events.
Since 2014, you’ll also find the Bierger Center on the Place Guillaume II. This is the citizen center of Luxembourg. When you’re standing on that place, you’ll have also a perfect view on the Cathedral of Luxembourg.
The Place Clairefontaine is a place in the heart of Luxembourg City. It is located between the Cathedral and the Chamber of Deputies. The most important buildings on the place are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of State.
Another thing on the Place Clairefontaine is the statue of the grand duchess Charlotte. It is there since 1990 and a very touristic sight.
A very nice presentation of Luxembourg City!

Lovely! I am moving to Luxembourg in September and hope for a repeat of this beautiful weather sometime next winter.
I just visited the city yesterday (10 Oct 2015) and saw all the sites you mentioned. Unfortunately (or fortunately), there was no snow. I also booked a nice walking tour for 12 Euro and I toured the Bock Casemates for 4 Euro. It is a nice little city to explore. There also happened to be a protest for Stop TTIP too, that was a little unexpecting, but not problematic. We’ll see how the treaty turns out. Thanks for sharing your write up!
