Europe largest waterfall: the Rhine Falls

Neuhausen is a village in the canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland. Even though it’s a very small town, it attracts every year millions of people because of the Rhine Falls. It’s the biggest waterfall in the mainland of Europe.

The Rhine Falls

The Rhine Falls are located in the North of Switzerland. They are 23 meters high and 150 meters wide. They were formed during the last ice age 14.000 to 17.000 years ago.

Mary Shelley, an author, visited the Rhine Falls in 1840 an described her visit as „A portion of the cataract arches over the lowest platform, and the spray fell thickly on us, as standing on it and looking up, we saw wave, and a rock, and cloud, and the clear heavens through its glittering ever-moving veil. This was a new sight, exceeding anything I had ever before seen; however, not be wet through, I was obliged quickly to tear myself away„.

Little Boat Tour

The first tour was a little boat tour around the waterfall. The boat got so close to the waterfall, that we got a little bit wet in the boat. But this tour was definitely worth to do, because it didn’t last very long, but you can see everything that needs to be seen.

Schloss Laufen

Secondly, we did the „Schloss Laufen“. We had to go to the other side of the Rhine, and walk a little bit to get there. All the nature around the Rhine Falls is just amazing and beautiful. If you know the Rhine in Cologne for example, you would never think that those two rivers are the same.

With the Schloss Laufen, you basically purchase a ticket to get closer to the Rhine Falls, but you can also visit a castle. This tour was much better than the boat tour, because you can walk by foot trough the nature, and you really explore the power of the waterfall.

Rock Tour

For this tour, you also take a boat, but you don’t do a tour, but that boat drives you in the middle of the waterfall where you’re leaving the boat and climbing up a rock. This was really the most amazing thing we did in Neuhausen, because you’re a sort of in the Rhine Falls.
