How to spend one day in Gibraltar

Most people don’t know that Gibraltar even exists. When I first enter this country, I absolutely fell in love with it. The people are as friendly as the British people in the UK but with a touch of Spanish charm, which gives a lovely combination. As Gibraltar is not that big, it is possible to see and discover it in only one day.

If you drive their by car from Spain, I recommend you to let your car on the Spanish side on one of the parking areas and enter Gibraltar by foot. It saves you an enormous amount of time. If you enter Gibraltar, you have to show your ID card or passport, so be sure to have it with you!

1. Airport

If you’re entering Gibraltar by foot, you have to walk over the airstrip. This is quite exciting, I mean when do you have the chance to walk almost completely free over an airstrip. But, if you’re hearing a bell, then you have to move quickly to the other side. At that point, nobody is allowed to cross the airstrip because a plane is going to land.

2. Cable Car

I think everyone who visits Gibraltar also have to take the Cable Car up to the Top of the Rock of Gibraltar. It is true that the Rock looks amazing from the ground, but the view from the Top of the Rock is at least just as beautiful. You can see a big part of Spain and also the Gibraltarian airport.

BUT something you don’t see on every Rock you climb, are definitely the Barbary macaques. As I wrote already in another post (here), they live completely free on the Rock. TIP: I think the best way to discover Gibraltar is to buy a ticket only for getting up to the Rock and walk downhill trough the Nature Reserve.IMG_6416

3. St. Michael’s Cave

The St. Michael’s Cave are caves with stalagmites and stalactites. They are illuminated by different colors, which make them looking amazing. It is told that the caves are bottomless and that the apes came trough that caves from the African continent to Gibraltar. They have a Cathedral Cave in it, which is used for concerts or theatre.

4. Apes‘ Den

I absolutely love the apes in Gibraltar. For more informations just take a look at my previous post (here).

5. Moorish Castle

The Moorish Castle shows the strategic and dominant position of Gibraltar. It is a really impressive construction and really interesting to visit. If you’re interested, the castle also have a really interesting background.

6. Dolphin Safari

As I wrote already in another post (here), I chose to do a dolphin safari in Gibraltar. I was so excited for this trip and hoped that we would see dolphins and yes, we saw free dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea. I can recommend the company „Dolphin Safari“. The last few weeks, there are a few bad stories about that company at tripadvisor, but to be honest, I cannot at all comprehend those stories.

7. Main Street

The Main Street is, as the name says it already, the main street of Gibraltar with a lot of shops, restaurants etc. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to explore that street completely.

8. Europa Point

The Europa Point is not in the very city center, so you have to take a bus to get there (or walk by foot, which takes a little bit).IMG_7553
The first thing you see when you leave the bus is the Lighthouse. Unfortunately you can’t visit the Lighthouse itself, but it’s still in use. Besides the Lighthouse, you’ll find the Sikorski Memorial, the Harding’s Battery, the Shrine of our Lady of Europe and the The Mosque of The Custodian of the The Holy Mosques.
