Lucerne is a city in north-central Switzerland, and also a german-speaking region. It is the most popular city in the Central Switzerland. And like Zurich, it is also located near a lake, the Lake Lucerne, which is the „Vierwaldstättersee“. Lucerne is located between two mountains, the Rigi and Pilatus. It’s a very attractive city for tourists.
The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) is a bridge made of wood. It was built in 1333, but most of the bridge had to be replaced after a fire caused by a discarded cigarette in 1993. It is a unique bridge, because there are a lot of interior paintings on the walls inside, but many were destroyed during the fire in 1993. It is officially Lucerne’s main tourist attraction, so be sure to put it on your to do list. I really enjoyed it, but there are many people who also want to see it, so be prepared for a crowd of people.
You can also go and visit the „Museggmauer“, which is an old wall with 8 tall watch towers. They all have different names and had, at that time all different functions. The Museggmauer is a part of the town fortification. Today, it is, together with the Chapel Bridge, the townscape. If you want to have a beautiful view on the whole city, you have to climb up one of those towers, even though it can be difficult for some of you. Be sure to have enough water with you.
Finally, I think you should see the Lion Monument, and perhaps the „Gletschergarten“ beside the Monument. It’s a glacier garden, but you have to pay an entrance fee. When we arrived there, it was already closed, which was really a pity. The Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal in German) is a sculpture in Lucerne which was hew in 1820-1821. It is hewed to commemorate the Swiss Guards who were victims during the French Revolution in 1792.
